WHY THE LARGEST GROWING SPORT IN THE WORLD IS FOR YOU

Esports is a leveller. Whether you’re physically in one of our arenas or gaming from home, esports as a sport, interest, passion, industry or career, esports allows you to compete across all ranges regardless of your physical ability, background or upbringing. It’s why it’s such an awesome sport!

We’ve used our previous successful case studies to create examples of how this can work for you. Naturally we’ve removed the real names of the students.

THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF ESPORTS FOR SEND STUDENTS

In recent years, esports (electronic sports) has emerged as a rapidly growing industry and a mainstream form of competitive gaming. While some may view esports as merely a recreational activity, it has shown remarkable potential in positively impacting SEND students.

These examples aim to explore the various ways in which esports can benefit such students, offering real-life examples that demonstrate its positive impact on their well-being, skill development, and social integration. based on our previous work.

Inclusive Nature:

Esports breaks down barriers and creates a level playing field for students with SEND and physical learning needs. The virtual environment allows students to compete based on their skills, strategy, and decision-making abilities rather than physical limitations.

For instance, students with mobility challenges can fully participate in esports tournaments, showcasing their cognitive abilities and potentially excelling in game-related tasks.

CASE STUDY

John, a student with physical disabilities, discovered his passion for esports and joined a school team. With the help of adaptive gaming devices, he was able to compete with his peers on an even keel.

Skill Development:

Esports offers students with SEND and physical learning needs an opportunity to develop a wide range of skills that are transferable to real-life situations.

These skills include communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, and strategic thinking. Esports competitions require coordination, collaboration, and effective communication among team members, fostering the development of these essential life skills.

CASE STUDY

Sara, a student with autism spectrum disorder, joined an esports team at her school. Through regular practice and participation in team tournaments, Sara enhanced her communication skills by effectively coordinating strategies with her teammates using in-game voice chat.

This improvement in communication spilled over into her everyday life, leading to better social interactions with peers and increased self-confidence.

Cognitive Stimulation:

Esports breaks down barriers and engages students’ cognitive abilities, promoting critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

Competitive gaming often requires quick reflexes, spatial awareness, and the ability to process and analyse information rapidly. These mental challenges can significantly benefit SEND students, helping them sharpen their cognitive abilities.

CASE STUDY

Tom, a student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), found solace in esports. The fast-paced nature of competitive gaming helped Tom focus and improved his ability to make split-second decisions.

As a result, his attention span and concentration improved not only during gaming sessions but also in academic settings.

Social Integration:

Esports provides a platform for SEND students who can connect with peers who share similar interests. Joining esports teams or clubs allows students to form social connections, build friendships, and develop a sense of belonging.

Through team practices, discussions, and competitions, they learn to collaborate, support one another, and celebrate both victories and losses together.

CASE STUDY

Emma, a student with dyslexia, struggled with social isolation and self-esteem issues. However, after joining an esports club at her school, she found a welcoming community where her passion for gaming was embraced.

Emma built strong friendships with her teammates, and together, they created a supportive environment where they could share experiences, learn from one another, and inspire personal growth.
